On 9th March, the BBC reported that Health officials are investigating an increase in cases of Legionnaires’ disease in parts of London, highlighting the importance of effective water system management and Legionella control in buildings.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has launched an investigation after several cases of the potentially serious lung infection were identified in north-west and south-west London. Specialists are currently working to determine whether the cases are linked and whether a common source of infection can be identified.
Investigation underway
As part of the investigation, UKHSA specialists are working with local partners to identify potential environmental sources of the bacteria. Investigators are interviewing patients and mapping their movements to identify common locations or facilities they may have visited before becoming ill.
Authorities have also advised organisations responsible for large water systems in the affected areas to carry out precautionary treatment, including emergency chlorination, while investigations continue.
Health officials say that no single source has been confirmed so far, but further enquiries are ongoing.
The importance of water system management
Legionella bacteria occur naturally in water but can multiply rapidly in large building water systems where conditions allow them to grow. Without proper maintenance, systems such as hot and cold water networks, cooling towers, and storage tanks can become a potential source of exposure.
For facilities managers, landlords and building operators, this incident highlights the importance of:
Regular Legionella risk assessments
Routine water monitoring and testing
Temperature control and system flushing
Cleaning, disinfection and system maintenance
Ongoing compliance with UK health and safety guidance
In England and Wales, around 300 cases of Legionnaires’ disease are reported each year, most of which are isolated incidents rather than outbreaks.
Supporting safer water systems
Events like this reinforce the critical role of proactive water hygiene management in preventing Legionella growth in building water systems.
At HBE UK, we support organisations across healthcare, hospitality, education and commercial sectors with Legionella risk assessments, monitoring and compliance services designed to help maintain safe, compliant water systems. Speak to one of our experts to find out more.
